The Tower: general, standing and reversed meaning

The Tower, general description

The Tower is the 17th card of the Major Arcana. It is part of Fatecaster’s Tarot card list that summarizes the Rider Waite Tarot cards’ meaning.

The Tower shows that the walls allegedly built to protect ourselves suddenly start to wobble. It’s usually about structures and dimension that became too narrow to us. This can affect our beliefs and principles such as our idea about career and financial security, our friendships and other personal relationships. Anyway, the card symbolizes a concept that used to give us beneficial security or even protection but we have grown out from it. They are usually surprising experiences, sometimes sparkling ideas that can ruin the old concept.

Since it’s mostly about the presumed base of our security we often consider these sudden changes as catastrophe. This breakthrough could either be caused by our own recognition or an external event. I Ching says the following about it: “The storm coming with thunders and lightning defeats the destructive tensions in nature.”

The Tower, standing

Unexpected catastrophe. A sudden change that leads to a new lifestyle and new understandings. It can trigger break up (in a relationship), divorce or a career break.

The Tower, reversed

Sudden acceleration of events that brings positive changes in the life. An avoided or survived catastrophe. New lifestyle and approach. It can trigger a break-up (relationship), divorce or a break in career, work.
